Spice up your storytime with some world music! Putumayo Kids produces music that not only entertains but also inspires cultural curiousity and will definitely add an element of fun to your programs. Play it while everyone shakes maracas or as children are coming into the program area. You'll be surprised how many children and parents will either understand the different languages being sung or recognize a song from their culture. The Playground Series is upbeat and perfect for dancing and playtime while the Dreamland Series combines soft tunes to help children unwind. Check out all the titles on Bibliocommons.

Scarf Dancing
I just started using scarves this year. I’ve always used them for baby time but thought it would be great for the 2-5 year olds too. They LOVE to dance around and shake their scarves. Here’s some songs we use.
Grand Old Duke of York
When we get to “…out of sight” we throw our scarves behind us.
Going to Kentucky
We're going to Kentucky
We're going to the fair
To see the senorita
With the flowers in her hair.
So shake it baby shake it,
Shake it like you can,
Shake it like a milkshake,
And pour it in a pan.
Now rumble to the bottom,
And rumble to the top.
Now turn around and turn around
Until you holler stop.
Shake Your Scarves
Tune: Row Your Boat
Shake, Shake, Shake your scarves
Shake them up and down
shake them fast and shake them slow
and shake them around and around
I Dropped My Scarf
(Tune: I Dropped My Hat by: Kathy Reid Naiman)
I Dropped my scarf, pick it up, pick it up x3
And I put around my neck!
This is the way we…..
dance with our scarves/ throw our scarves/ jump with our scarves/ hide with our scarves
Hokey Pokey – put your scarf in/out, etc.
Ring around the Rosie
(holding onto our scarves in a circle)

Parachute Songs and Rhymes
I’ve had a parachute at Binbrook for years and have many songs that I sing when the parachute comes out.
Here’s some we always sing –
Shake and Shake
Tune: Tap and Stop on Tickles and Tunes by Kathy Reid Naiman
Let’s shake and shake and shake and shake and stop!
(hold the stop for a few seconds for suspense)
Let’s shake and shake and shake and shake and stop!
Let’s shake and shake and shake and shake and stop!
Let’s shake and shake and shake and shake and stop!
(gradually get faster and faster)
This one is great for shakers too!
When the Parachute Goes Up
Sung to: "If you‛re happy and you know it"
When the parachute goes up - Stomp your feet
When the parachute goes up - Stomp your feet
When the parachute is high
And floats up in the sky
When the parachute goes up - Stomp your feet
... bend your knees...wiggle your bottom...lift one leg...shout hooray...shake your head…etc.
POPcorn
(Start by crouching low and shaking the parachute slowly)
You put the oil in the pot and you let it get hot
You put the popcorn in and you start to grin
Sizzle, sizzle x5
POP! (jump up on pop and lift the parachute into the air)
Sleeping bunnies ……… a great one to sing. Have the parents hold the parachute and the kids lay under it. When they hop up the parachute lifts into the air and parents shake it.
Zoom, Zoom We’re Going to the Moon……another good one. Crouch low and jump up when the kids “blast off”.
Grand Old Duke of York……a favourite too.

Animals on Sticks
I use the internet or clip art to find an image to print on coloured paper. Then laminate, cut out and tape to a popsicle stick.
I hand them out to the kids and sing songs relating to the particular animals or object. I have many lists of fingerplays and rhymes saved that I could easily send to anyone interested. (dbesic@hpl.ca)
Recently I added rocket ships to my collection and sing – Zoom, Zoom and Inside a Rocket Ship. The kids love coming up and getting one. They use them to dance and move with.

The Good Morning Train
Tune: She’ll Be Coming ‘Round the Mountain
The good morning train is coming, how are you? Choo, choo
The good morning train is coming, how are you? Choo, choo
The good morning train is coming
The good morning train is coming
The good morning train is coming, how are you? Choo, choo
(make arm movement like a train conductor pulling the bell for choo, choo & have the children clap to the rhythm of the song on their knees. I use a train whistle for the choo, choo)
And we’ll say hello to (child’s name) Marissa, how are you? choo, choo
And we’ll say hello to (another child’s name) Kevin, how are you? choo, choo
And we’ll say hello to (another child’s name) Carina,
And we’ll say hello to (another child’s name) Kendra,
And we’ll say hello to (another child’s name) Martin, how are you? choo, choo.
(after you sing it so that everyone has a chance to say their name you sing…)
And we’ll say hello to everyone
and we’ll say hello to everyone
and we’ll say hello to everyone when it comes CHOO, CHOO!

On My Toe There Is a Flea
On my toe there is a flea,
now it’s climbing past my knee,
past my tummy, past my nose,
on my head, where my hair grows.
On my head there is a flea,
Now it’s climbing down on me,
Past my tummy past my knee,
On my toe TAKE THAT YOU FLEA!
(Did you see that! That silly flea jumped to the other foot so now we have to do it again!)
